Maurice Re: "Britain was exporting civilization and freedom" That is an absolute truth. Look at a world map of 100 years ago. Almost half the world was a British possession of some sort. Quite amazing really, and lots of the places were better off then than now.

The New Dealers pressured Britain to give up her colonies and this was a mistake. Some places like India were ready for home rule but many others like many African colonies would have been better off to have taken a slower path to independence.
