I've come to the sad conclusion that that the people with the big appetite could not be satisfied no matter what the MSM did so why bother. There's no incentive for an outlet to "improve" because they will still get tarred with the same broad brush.

The extraordinary success of Fox News is giving the daily rebuttal to your "sad conclusion". Media consumers are not happy with the product. They didn't used to have a choice. Now they do.

The consumer is not happy that the media has now taken a neutral position between America and its enemies. They do not think neutrality is any more appropriate in Iraq, esp. given the depraved nature of Zarqawi's killers, than for the local nightly news to take a neutral stance between the police and the criminals. I do note that local reporters do not think it discredits them as journalists to express unhappiness over murders, or to rejoice when the murderer is apprehended.

Moreover, if you return to pre-Vietnam war coverage, I think you will find that it included some kind of a strategic overview (much easier, granted, in conventional warfare where the position of the front can be noted), and even - gasp! - expressed hope and confidence in the eventual victory of American forces.

There was none of this lauding of the enemy's "increased sophistication" just because he put together some squadron-sized attacks that turned out to be utter failures and were quickly abandoned as a tactic - something that I also will find noted only in blogs, not the MSM. All I would have gotten if I just read the headlines is that the insurgency is growing daily in sophistication and lethality.
