Now if we just stopped the nonsense of requiring these people to file taxes each year.

The problem with having so many people who don't pay income taxes is that it undercuts our sense of citizen responsibility to contribute and our stake in how the money gets spent. It would be so much better for our political culture if everyone had to pay income taxes, even if it were just a few bucks, so we could erode the acceptance of the idea of the federal role in income redistribution in which ever larger proportions of us are takers rather than givers. I realize that it's impractical for everyone to file and pay, but our practicality comes at a price. The price is the greater perceived legitimacy of the nanny state.
