Even though I did, and still do, believe we made a huge mistake when we started this war, we are there now, and the constant bombardment of how many are dying, and what a mess it is, grates on me. I don't see it as helpful.

Rambi, thanks for a breath of fresh air. If I weren't an honest mathematician, I would agree with you 1,000 percent. But as it is, I'm limited to 100%.

Just ask yourself what the public perception would have been if, say, we had had live up-to-the-minute coverage of D-day, with thousands of American boys being shot to death on the beach on live TV, or the bombing of Dresden with tens of thousands of people burning to death in front of our eyes as we ate our Domino's pizza in front of the TV, or of the landing on Guadalcanal. Would Americans have supported the war if they had seen the first twenty minutes of "The Saving of Private Ryan" day after day after day on live TV?

It's so easy to carp and criticize and be perpetually negative. But in the end, does it really advance the cause of humanity?

>start looking for solutions and common ground.

Very well said. Unfortunately, IMO to retain political power while pleasing constituents would be seen as a weakness on both sides. Especially to incumbents. On a business problem. UAL and the Union have a serious problem. Seems along the same political trust situation.

Hope you don't mind that I followed you over here. <g> Based on what I read, I'm not as hopeful as you are. It appears that one poster has already been banned for pointing to a news story that contradicts an opinion advanced by the thread monitor. It seems to me that that is not a good sign.

I know little about the person banned (Brumar89) and suspect that he may be a partisan conservative, but I found his posts here informative and relatively inoffensive (by SI standards). Perhaps he was banned for a history of highly partisan behavior elsewhere. In that event, it appears that the traditional SI "double-standard" (only banning those whose viewpoints are different) prevails here as well. Left-leaning posters with long histories of extreme partisanship have been welcomed and encouraged.

"Good luck with the thread. There is no way to go but up, given the tenor of the political threads around here."
