For example, what does a libertarian think about having to take your shoes off at the airport to board a plane, but Congress would never approve mandatory breathalyzers connected to an ignition cutout in a vehicle to stop drunk driving? How about biometric trigger locks for all guns, new and retrofitted over all existing weapons in the US?

We take big, expensive steps in some areas and less in others. That is tacit tolerance, IMHO, for letting thousands of people get killed prematurely.

I am not advocating a society where we are so protected from all possible dangers that we can't get out of bed in the morning. But I find the rah-rah for one threat while downplaying others more than a bit hypocritical from our public officials.
