U.K. same-store retail sales fall further in May

LONDON (AFX) -- Retail sales in the U.K. fell 2.4% in May on a same-store basis, the British Retail Consortium said, citing consumer caution and the slowing housing market. Total sales rose 1.4% for the month. The three-month trend rate of growth fell in May to -1.5% from -0.9% in April. "While some analysts still claim that the continuing weakness in retail sales is only a 'blip', these figures should remove any lingering doubt that we are now in a consumer-led recession," Director General Kevin Hawkins said. The BRC urged the Bank Of England to cut interest rates at this week's meeting
