Personally, I think it would be good FOR AMERICA if every single person was drafted. Those not physically fit for active service could be put into some kind of desk job. I know, I went from a GENTLEMANLY C in Florida HS's to graduating FIRST IN MY CLASS for a private somewhat elite northern college. I doubt I got any smarter while in the service, I just learned DISCIPLINE and the value of a good education. IE the USMC MATURED ME. I think this nation is getting too damn soft. Plus, the service offers opportunities for inner city kids to see what the REAL WORLD is all about.
HOWEVER, all that being said, there is absolutely NO DOUBT in my mind looking at it FROM THE SERVICES VIEWPOINT an all volunteer service is much better for THEM. jdn

"We needed and had a draft long before Vietnam."

We had a draft in the Civil War. Remember the draft riots in NYC? Draft works when the ideals of the war are sold to the american people. Call me stupid but this administration lack of candor with the american people about iraq--not the wmds and all the bull shit from the left--but the lack of planning and competence in execuction post war is what i have in mind.

"Nixon let immature, loud-mouthed teen-agers set strategic national defense policy. That was idiotic."

No Johnson let military blow hards like Westmoreland and bureacrats like rumsfeld, er er macnamara get us into a war we should never have been in in the first place. Those immature, loud mouthed teenagers probalby prevented the Vietnam wall from having 50k more names. But we were winning, yeah i know--hear that here every day it seems.

My father, who grew up in France, often wondered why all the democracies didn't have a foreign legion like France did. Much easier to use without domestic pressure. In America's case, it would be super easy to fill, serve x numbers of years, get an honorable discharge, become a citizen.

Any thoughts?
