What makes you think that I am trying to "cover up" for Nixon? I am merely trying, once again, to correct your factual errors. By the time of the 1972 elections, Nixon had reduced U.S. troop levels in Vietnam to 24,200. Why would he do that if he was, as you state, "very happy to keep the war going and going."

By the way, Nixon was a moderate.

Nixon did have the potential to be one of the 20th century's most productive presidents. Unfortunately, he had a paranoid personality and surrounded himself with people who played to his worst instincts.

I don't think that the Iraq war will not be a major issue in 2006. I expect the insurgency to be crushed by then and troop levels reduced. The war will be entirely off the table by 2008.
