You ever been to Prague? They have a Medeival Torture Museum with instruments from the 1200s-1600s which were used to torture people. It's just off one of the bridges heading away from the castle side. You should check it out - it seems right up your alley.

Each instrument has a brief description of how it was used, and then usually an example that reads something along the lines of "On February 12, 1544, John Bascomb was placed on the rack when he denied he was a witch. After 8 hours of stretching he admitted that he was a witch. He also admitted that his wife was a witch, his two children were witches, his mother was a witch, and his wife's two sisters were both witches, and his dog had the evil eye." They were all burned at the stake the following morning.
