Well, tejek, what can I say? I agree with you 100%. I wish this country and it's leaders had the fortitude to take the harder road that leads to greater rewards. But we have politicians catering to companies and to the latest polls of the masses. The masses never think long term. They think only very short term. So I'm really getting despaired of getting a leader that will get us off the oil. If Clinton, with tree-hugging Gore, couldn't get us off the oil when we had surpluses out the wazzoo, what hope do we ever have?

"We could have taken serious steps to reduce our oil dependency"

We did. There is a reason why we haven't built many new power plants since the late 1970's, efficiency is way up. Ever wonder why there haven't been any new refineries built since the early 1970's, yet our imports of refined gasoline hasn't increased much? Now true, we import more refined other products, but that hasn't kept pace with population increases. And there was a lot of research into solar power, wind and other alternative power generation methods. We were pretty serious about cutting our dependence on foreign oil. However, Reagan got elected and all those efforts were history, as it were.
