That is why I would advocate giving people a choice,

In this type of case a choice is equivalent to "cherry-picking" those who don't place stress on the system, and leaving the government to pick up all the hard cases. That type of choice always leads to the type of programs that most people don't like.

The middle class already has the option of 401K and IRA plans to supplament their social security. There is nothing real to gain for them. What is most needed is a baseline, defined benefit program in case the private options don't pan out, and that pretty much describes the current social security system.

The wealthy have even more options available.
