After hearing you must pay a certain percentage of your salary to the church each year not true, one has a choice: At any time you are free to apply for the release from the membership of any of the approved German churches. I did that a long time ago and so did my kids. When they decided, however, to have their evangelic confirmation and being baptized 2 weeks prior to that (a requirement), I did provide a generous dedication to same church. I don't like freebees...
