well
when I take the kids
we buy the large refillable popcorn for 5.00 and I can feed all the kids (and friends) more than enough with that- I bring little paper bags for them to eat out of. Also, we have refillable cups we bought YEARS ago, and we can get any drink for 1.00 (46 ounces, I think, to our cups, which is really too much- all that sugar, if it's soda. So I might only buy one, and make two small kids split it). So though we buy food, it's very very cheap. :-)

A number (more than I like to think of) years ago I looked into how the government calculated the poverty rate. Among the things I found was that the cost of dinners was calculated as the cost of a large hamburger (I forget what they called it then, but it was the big one), large fries, and a large drink at McDonalds. Eating at McD's for dinner every night was considered by these researchers to be the minimum expenditure for food.

I don't know about anybody else, but I find that pretty sad. And I can feed a family of four a much more nutritious meal than that for a lot less money.

Ah, government.
