irrespective of what the majority of Vietnamese people wanted. And, by what grounds do you think the Vietnamese people wanted a Communist govt? Unless you where there, how could you have a clue, and if you where there, how could you make such a statement. Here are some of the facts from my growing FOGGY mind. 1. When the North/South partition was made MANY I forget how many North Vietnamese people FLED to the South. 2. During OUR part of the war most of the politics occurred in the CITIES. The city folk where very much ANTI North Vietnamese. 3. Now, you may be judging your comment on the country folk. Its true, most of those people didnt know a Capitalist from a Communist and all they wanted was to BE LEFT ALONE by both sides. Couple other comments: 1. Why in the world do you people continue to blame NIXON for the War. He was the President who ENDED the war. To have a PACT requires BOTH PARTIES to sign, to even get the NVA to come to the bargaining table he had to take some very strong steps including; a. Invading Cambodia to eliminate that portion of the Ho Chi Ming trail and a secure hideout for the NVA. b. Vastly increasing the bombing of Hanoi and mining of their harbor. 2. We got involved in a LIMITED way over AGAIN saving the French's bacon, some thanks we get NOW. Eisenhower was instrumental in this BUT old Ike never had any intention of going all out. Kennedy, increased but who knows how far he would have gone, since he never got to finish his Presidency. It was JOHNSON and ONLY Johnson that got this thing out of control and once committed we had to try and stick it out. Nixon was left with a country against the war, and had to find an Honorable out. The NVA wouldnt give it to him without extreme pressure put on them. Now IRAQ is an ENTIRELY different matter. On the average the Iraqi people are far better educated and more Worldly then the peasant Vietnamese were, at least in my time. There is no official invasion from another country. Rather this is an ideological struggle, the fanatical Islamic against the more modern Islamic. It VASTLY is important for the Non Islamic world that the modern Islamic win this battle and we are assisting them. Its a DAMN SHAME others that OUGHT to be involved helping us are sitting on the sidelines. I have lost ALL RESPECT FOR PARTICULARLY France and Germany. jdn
