No, Newsweek reported what was told to them by someone else. They didn't invent the story

Well, as it happens, they did sort of invent the story. But in any case, they generated it as a story - they made it public, they were the first reporters of it. Therefore, a certain onus lay on them to get it right.

One thing the ensuing hysteria does is prevent anybody from talking about the original story. Convenient, no?

The original story, viewed non-hysterically, amounts to a sober discussion of the boundaries of human interrogation. But that is not the discussion the people who came up with slogans like "the gulag of our times" wanted to have. And Durbin was trying to cash in the same card. So I hardly think this qualifies as a distraction from a larger story, more like whipping up a small story into a cause celebre

The point about all these connecting issues is there is no story. Gitmo is a model for treating America's enemies humanely during a time of war.

If the San Francisco state prison (which I don't really know if it exists but I think you get my point), were examined under the same kind of microscopic (let me find anything on the Warden Democrat efforts), it would fail completely.

Can you imagine the headlines for ANY state prison.

"Guards allow rape of inmates, pictures at 9pm).
"Warden allows clubbing of inmates", news at 6pm.
"Guards kick Bible under cot", news at 4pm.
"Riot breaks out, has the penil system abused the Geneva convention", news at 10pm.

And on and on and on...

The point is at the deck plate level of how people are treated, our military guards are doing a pretty damn good job when measured against any prison in the freaking world. The only difference is other prisons don't have a bunch of seditionist Demolibs trying to attack the President via that prison system.

It's despicable touting rumors as "facts" which disparage the hell out of our military members. If the Senator has an issue with the prison, he has the power and authority to go on a fact finding trip and influence events first hand. Every Senator is treated like a King by the military when they tour. And Durbin could find out first hand what is going on if he truly wanted to know. Unfortunately, he doesn't want to know, he only wants to throw political mud around and use the military as his pile of dung.
