Factory farming produces a product that causes pollution and disease, and creates animal lives full of abject misery and horror. Did you know that 50% of Americans die of heart disease, and that this is a disease of meat eaters? Since is is not nutritionally necessary to eat meat (and I would add that it is actually undesirable from a health standpoint), it seems like the only positive aspect to factory farming is the profits made by factory farmers. Are there some other positives that you can list? Is eating a whole lot of a product that is unhealthy considered a positive?

I think the American government pushes meat on us, aided by very clever lobbying groups. It is not the norm in all the world's countries to eat huge slabs of meat. This is a diet of affluence (but the public health costs are staggering). I think babies growing up in America are mostly just fed meat, and they just grow up with the habit of eating it. I don't think most people see the culture of meat very clearly, or ever really do anything more conscious than whatever they were raised with.

I actually agree with you about gold jewelry, and the human rights abuses inherent in mining most things. I don't wear diamonds because the are the product of pain, exploitation and monopolistic practices. While there is a whole movement to promote vegetarianism, and organics, there is not much of an outcry about gold. I'm not sure why.
