It's odd that you and Shades see a solution in shooting and violence: <They don't fear a bullet, a slap in the face or even being spit on like in the old days. If you can't beat them you might as well join them.> That's so quaintly American. Violence is as American as apple pie.

Fear is a great deterrent - it has been used since the dawn of man to enact change and still used effectively today - if you disagree please tell me why? Americans have the standard of living they do because they are a peace loving nation without a military?? N Korea could have put all those resources into feeding thier starving poor - why build bombs? They should listen to you - hehe. Maybe if the west disarms themselves N. Korea will follow suit and follow our good example no? You sound so silly.

"Speak politely or I'll shoot you, punch you, slap your or spit in your face!!" That seems an odd way to bring up children, or to interact with other adults.

Spare the rod and spoil the child no? Are japanese children not disciplined with a spanking if they misbehave? Their children are born polite and never get unruly no? They attacked the USA they were such non violent and polite people, and today they do not depend on US military to protect them from chinese hordes - arent they having disputes about OIL now - cant we all just get along? - how much tax do they pay to support US military btw?

Joining them because they continue seems equally odd. Each to their own.

So you will turn the other cheek when I slap you? HAHA - your lack of fear of retribution allows the crap to spew from your fingers - but if you were afraid - like in the middle of IRAQ with say 20 al queda around you with swords perhaps you would not be so easy with your thoughts no? Silly al qeuda, thinking violence and fear is going to get anything done - they should listen to you. Isreal - god's chosen - if they would just listen to you, violence has no future. Silly palestines that shoot back when shot at - they should lay down their guns and start singing koombayah on thier CDMA phones on 3 way.

The argument for duels has some merit, but not a lot.

Well if oil becomes more scarce in this world, why will things turn out peacefully in the future and not like that crazy mohawk tribe from mad max? They are going to share that limited resource out of the goodness of thier heart?

Mquirce, you are a collection of atoms and molecules trying to replicate, if some other atoms and molecules get in your way, natural laws of the physical universe will cause certain events to happen. If I have a gun and am about to shoot you, you are going to bare your chest in PEACEFUL resistance, didn't some tribe in NZ do this 200 years ago and they are all dead now? I am sure it was talked about here on SI in one of the more popular threads.

Maurice, Re: "dueling" I made reference to an opinion expressed 150 years ago about a practice that had been on the wane for 50 or more years even then. But that heritage along with the general American proclivity to "speak softly but carry a big stick" is just part of our nature and a part I hope to see preserved. It could be that said proclivity has contributed to our position as "global superpower" and "world policeman" and if so is an unfortunate side effect of a basically positive feature. For my part I want this country out of the "world policeman" role ASAP. And even more importantly, I want our borders sealed to the maximum degree ASAP. I look with hope to "peak oil", "global economic meltdown", "H5N1" or Osama's next outrage to be the catalyst to begin a new American Isolationism.

This country, especially the Old South is an incredibly peaceful place. Europe is peaceful but only because there are armies of gendarmes everywhere. Here, we don't even lock our doors at night. When I was younger I hitchhiked all over this country and never worried about watching my back, even in rough places. I've lived in all sorts of places abroad and everywhere there, even your "civilized" places, watching your back is your first order of business. But being a sort of toughie I kinda enjoyed the challenge. <g>

I have young children and I'm teaching them as I was taught; to stand up for yourself but never ever be a bully or be impolite. Its the American way.
