He didn't really back down. He said he was sorryif he offended anyone. And, of course, the only ones harping on this were the whiney RWers. They put words in Durbin's mouth that he never said - because lying to discredit others isn't beneath them...it's their m.o.

Did Cheney ever apologize for saying 'f*** y**' to a Senator in the Senate Chamber?

Did Frist and Delay ever apologize for going after judges in the Schiavo case?

Did Frist ever apologize for making a bad diagnosis from the videotape?

Durbin should not have apologized, he should have turned the flap into his bully pulpit and pounded the admin about the Gitmo hearings which Bush rejected.

Geez Loueeze, when will the Dems ever learn.

Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican and former prisoner of war, spoke in Durbin's defense. "All of us, I believe, who have had the opportunity to serve in public life from time to time have said things that we deeply regret. I know that I have. I would like to say that the senator from Illinois, he did the right thing, the courageous thing, and I believe we can put this issue behind us."
