I'll buy the gatekeeper part; probably alcohol is the first.

I should explain my somewhat casual attitude. For the last 20 years, I've been living in a region called the Emerald Triangle. Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity Counties. For 35 years, it's had the reputation of having the finest product in the world. I'm not sure about that; could be valid, could be local pride.
A large % of the population has some connection with the industry. For years, the Ag dept. tried including an estimate when they sent their production figures to the state. They just asked the state about certifying organic; state said no. There are growers, mules, trimmers at $20/hr cash, cloners, breeders, couriers, you name it. It's pervasive.
The dialog the last 6 months in 3 of the 4 incorporated cities was about regulating the growers of medical marijuana, because the smell was too strong for some folks, who don't seem to complain about the smell of fermenting grapes during the crush. One of the people arguing in favor of outdoor in the city was a county elected official.
That's just the way it is up here.

Yumboldt,Sour Diesel, Diesel, Afgani Goo, Pink Cream Soda, Purple Urkle, Northern Lights,Skunk whatever, Black Widow, White Widow, 30 year old strains, the not yet named cross of Matanuska Thunderfuck...

You wouldn't believe it...

But I am told I have a way to show you; my friend from NorCal Norml has been meeting with some fairly big time Hollywood documentary folks, and there is supposed to be a flick coming out this fall. He said they had filmed down south and in SF, and Mendo blew them away. Spent 2 hours with the sheriff. I'll post some announcements when it comes out.
