I would say corruption has played an even greater role.

Nigerian corruption is staggering.

There are MANY countries in Africa, as you well know CB. I was thinking of Egypt in particular when I included Africa in this mix. And for that matter, there is NO reason NOT to include ALL countries in Africa....Many countries in the world beside Africa have had their citizens enslaved...Ireland for instance. We don't give every country that has had enslaved people a pass. There is no reason not to include Africa. If we do, it is discriminatory.

Africa has talented people, bright people, and more than enough natural resources to have done much more than they have done as a continent.

Egypt's history goes back for centuries BC. I don't know, but my guess is, so does the rest of the countries in Africa have history BC as well.

If we weren't being so PC, we would recognize the BC part of their heritage, and ask why haven't the countries done more for their people....

CB, As far as I know, there are no colonial countries in Africa, but in too many of them, they are still killing each other in some sort of tribal warfare, and when the kill, it is brutally. Not just a simple gun shot, but beheading and other forms of chopping up a body. That doesn't bode well for friendly relations.
