Just looking at some different ways to protect the balance of power in the ME. More than anything, I guess I'm looking for some moral and economic guidance to our objectives in Iraq. Unlike you, I don't see Bush as being evil. The problem with terrorism is that it is linked to all of the problems in brutal regimes in Saudi Arabia and other countries. On some level, the press has convinced us that the religious intolerance of Islam is OK. They keep pointing out the evidence of terrorism is a sign that we are losing the war. They fail to point out that the Muslims are so severely repressed by intolerance and State controlled religion, they cannot even express their honest opinion. You have to get an Shiite out of Saudi Arabia before they can remotely comment on the situation, without the immediate threat of death. The repression of culture is so severe that no one is allowed to express any opinion on religion or politics. Everything is state censored and the punishment is death. In an Islamic world of intolerance, you need accept the maximum amount of religious control in order to avoid the consequence of death. These are the same values that the US has committed to protect. The lack of religious freedom, human rights, treatment of women are all things that every person in the world should hope to protect. Democracy and freedom may be political ideals that we are too spoiled to appreciate, but the free will to choose how to worship God is not a justification for violence. Ironically, the minority of extreme intolerance is so bad that the If you want to blame Bush for all of this just because Iraq is an oil rich country, that is OK. I just want to make sure that I am asking the right questions. I look towards the intolerance of the Saad based link to Wahhab as an unfortunate condition that needs to be politically corrected. It doesn't make the US bad people because we are trying to offset this horrible reality of religious and economic intolerance that we are trying to contain in the ME.
