yes you have to dig deeper, schumer is a strong democrat - this is buy partisan - and when I say BUY - I mean like the kind where rich power mongers who got the whole china ball rolling so they could get richer are upset now that slant eye does not want to play ball anymore so they get their BUY partisan friends to sail this through - powerful friends from both sides of the aisle - now for all my dislike of greenspan he seems to have the rationality to understand the HORROR this thing would really be on the common man with his extra low prices at wal-mart - but he will be gone soon and I fear legislation like this will come to pass if not this year then maybe the next - remember what council of foreign relations member Professor Bhagwati said - if it passes, it will pass to help the rich get richer at the cost of all the common man in both countries - the social economist that he is - he thinks the tariff would be a HORRIBLE event with us trying to bring the whole world to free trade and then slam tariffs on our most favored nation.

Everything I have read at mises.org from the old man himself goes into many reasons why tariffs are not going to bring the jobs back. They are just going to help a few get richer while they PRETEND to help the little guy - the screwing never stops.

Its simple really, right - if you want to beat them - you do a better job for cheaper - so instead of sending princess to college to party til she pukes like the bush twins - you make them work hard in a mud hut eating a bowl of rice - it is a war of living standards. We cant run this coming world of 9 billion on the USA standard of living without some resource wars and mega deaths - but we probably can if we take em all down to the 1 bowl of rice a day - of course the rich power mongers will still have thier ivory towers. The mass majority of the rest of us can fight over the crumbs like we always have. Why does Tony Blairs kid get that great intern Job over that hard working chinese student with much higher grades? Hmmmm.

Remember that 76 gas stations and refineries are owned by Conoco-Phillips petroleum, not Unocal.

p66conoco76.conocophillips.com

<In southern California, the Texaco facilities are close to the Chevron ones and close to the Unocal facilities.>

I was surprised to learn, from someone on the Big Dog board, that this had happened after Unocal CEO Hartley had retired.

Unocal gives Chevron more exploration and production employees, along with oil and gas reserves and projects in progress. But no overlap in facilities that I'm aware of.
And Unocal doesn't have that many domestic assets.

In the unlikely event Chevron gets dumped, they get $500 million walking money. But I'll be very surprised if they don't buy Unocal. They've done everything possible - except raise their bid.

<<Tariff>> ... makes no difference, except for TwoAPuc (The Worst of All Unintended Consequences).

Cost up, import as usual, and still no factories in the land of USD 1 mln honmes.

The issue is not tariffs or exchange rate

The issue is thrift, and cost

Japan bought art and buildings

Not oil and gas fields
