Zak,
I have been saying this on and off the thread for weeks. Even some of my anti-iraq war friends think me daft. The terrorists will understand a timetable for what it is--US will fight like hell to help the iraqis, the iraqis will fight like hell to be prepared for withdrawl. Initially the terrorists will step up their attacks and be repelled. They arent going to Disneyland to vacation until end 2006.
Timetable is not cut and run--it is the opposite. It will also soothe the american public which is turning negative on the war and we can debate all day whether that's because of MSM or Bush admin disingenuity. In the end, the answer to the above question becomes irrelevent because there will be a fixed end date. Look at it from a parents perspective. If you have a 15 year old boy, you can now continue to support the war which may be your inclination without sending your kid off to a war which you may feel is being run unintelligently. Thus its good politics too. I dont think there is anyone else on this thread that supports this with the exception of Ed (cnyd).. mike

But why not couple that with an announced timetable for withdrawal?

Because first and foremost, war is a contest of will. The jihadis believe that their inferior means can defeat our superior means because we are soft and don't have the will to win. Announcing "We intend to bug out of here in a year, win or lose" rather confirms that idea, don't you think?

If you were a jihadi, would you smile or frown when you heard the announcement?
