Sometime over the past ten years, the GOP started changing the rules......probably as Rove was gaining traction nationally. It took the Dems a long time to understand the change of tactics. I think this last election was a watershed........I think the Dems. have finally figured out that this ain't your father's GOP. tejek, I think the change in this country's attitudes happened alot more recently than that. I don't like Rove. He is a shameless manipulator, but he had one thing dead right. The Dems completely misread the mood in this country after 9/11. After 9/11, the Dems wanted to talk about what the U.S. had done to deserve this and how we should learn to understand our Muslim friends better so that they won't do these bad things to us. The Republicans, on the other hand, prepared for war. You see, at the core of this country was a feeling of invincibility that was stripped away. At a moment like that, it is the easiest thing in the world to become a popular politician. All you have to do is give the seething public what they want and that is revenge. That may not be very enlightened, but that's the way it was and Rove was right. Now that revenge has been had, I think everyone realizes that the reason why it all happened is that we have been supporting dictators in that part of the world for the last 50 years. On that score, we should apologize to the Arab people and tell sell to them the idea that a free, Democratic Iraq is a good place to start to right the wrongs we have done them in the past. But they need to help us make it happen, because in doing so, they help themselves achieve freedom. Another reason why we were attacked is because they see as as biased towards Israel, and rightly so. We need to tell Israel once and for all, that until the day comes that they pull out of the West Bank all of their settlements, they will not get another penny from us. But we must also predicate any financial support to the Palestinians on their complete cessation of all suicide bombings against civilians. They have a right to fight soldiers and settlers who live on their land in Gaza and the West Bank. However, no political justification is good enough for killing civilians within Israel's borders. As for the rest of your post, corruption exists on both sides of the aisle. The GOP hasn't invented the concept in the last few years.
