Sometime over the past ten years, the GOP started changing the rules......probably as Rove was gaining traction nationally. It took the Dems a long time to understand the change of tactics. I think this last election was a watershed........I think the Dems. have finally figured out that this ain't your father's GOP. tejek, I think the change in this country's attitudes happened alot more recently than that. I don't like Rove. He is a shameless manipulator, but he had one thing dead right. The Dems completely misread the mood in this country after 9/11. After 9/11, the Dems wanted to talk about what the U.S. had done to deserve this and how we should learn to understand our Muslim friends better so that they won't do these bad things to us. The Republicans, on the other hand, prepared for war. That isn't true. Maybe some were talking that way but the majority gave Bush carte blanche to do what he wanted. That's what makes me angry......the Dems went along with Bush's excellent adventure. You make like you get it when you say Rove is a shameless manipulator but then you turn around and buy into the manipulation. It was GOP spin that said the Dems were weak. This thread was very active then. We saw how the Dems reacted......they folded like a cheap suit and gave everything Bush wanted. Rove is incredible with the media. He's so good that 56% of Americans still believe we found WMDs in Iraq. Most people have a hard time believing that the GOP would prevaricate with something so serious. But Rove et al don't care........the end justifies the means becuase they are ideologues. I first ran into ideologues when I was a council deputy for a councilman. These were ideologues from the far left.......major buttheads. First they went after the councilman who would be liberal by your standards but was considered more moderate in CA. They claimed he was really on the right and in the pocket of big business. As I got a reputation for getting things done, they went after me as well. I dislike ideologues......they can not be trusted and they are dangerous. And I think Rove et al are very dangerous and can not be ignored at all. You see, at the core of this country was a feeling of invincibility that was stripped away. At a moment like that, it is the easiest thing in the world to become a popular politician. All you have to do is give the seething public what they want and that is revenge. That may not be very enlightened, but that's the way it was and Rove was right. Revenge was Afganistan; Iraq was hyperbole. As for the rest of your post, corruption exists on both sides of the aisle. The GOP hasn't invented the concept in the last few years. True but I think the GOP is bringing corruption to a whole new level. We'll see. ted
