PRESIDENT BUSH yesterday challenged EU leaders to scrap massive subsidies paid to their farmers, saying free trade with Africa would eliminate the need for Third World aid.

It's a nice idea, but is it true? What can they sell us that we can't buy cheaper from, say, Central and South America, which are closer? And those countries mostly sell us food that can't be grown cheaply by a massive conglomerate, such as certain kinds of fresh fruit (berries, for example.)

Everybody buys groceries, but grocery shopping is one of my hobbies, I do it just for fun. Can't recall ever seeing anything from any African country for sale, except for palm oil, which most Americans won't eat because the fat is saturated.

Maybe he means that Europeans would buy African-grown food?
