The problem with that approach is it smacks of what we did in Central America to fight the godless communists. Supporting governmental terror against citizens only leads the citizens to dislike America, hence we continue as a target in the future. We do need Islamic countries to improve their governments. How to achieve this, and to what degree our involvement complicates things is the big problem.

i suggest that may not be in our national interest.

We need overseas bases in central Asia. China and Russia don't like it. Tough toenails. Remember Kipling's "great game." It's still going on.
