Shades Re: "Mexico" You must have been near the Guatemalan border or Chiapas. The Maya don't care much for the northerners and government is pretty heavy handed with the Maya. Most of the rest of the country, except for the US border is pretty peaceful and safe, at least in the daytime. I've been through all sorts of police checkpoints and I guess a couple in Mexico and never had a bit of trouble. But the machine guns behind the sandbags are not for show; they will use them. I was at a place like that in Belize where I think some guys were shot. I was on a ship one time when it was boarded by the Philippine Navy looking for some rebels. That was exciting.

When I was a kid Alto was not a prison but a reform school for bad kids, the only one in Georgia I think. It is a bad boy prison for adults now. One of my high school buddies was sent there for six months. They tatooed a 4 or 5 digit number on his ankle. The guy now owns a chain of old folks homes, guess his stay in that reform school gave him some ideas about institutional management.

Having been born and raised in Mexico, I can counter each of your stories with tales that would make the coldest hear melt. Mexicans are by and large incredibly generous and big hearted. Like anywhere else, there are of course exceptions.

Have you stopped to consider why it may be that these misadventures seem to haunt you?
