Unfortunately, most Americans identify themselves as "conservative" - mentally associating "conservative" with what "conservative" means in terms of financial investments - sound, responsible management. The E.F. Hutton thing.

They associate "conservative" with fiscal responsibility, sound foreign policy, lean government, and high standards of personal conduct.

They associate "liberal" with fiscal irresponsibility, thoughtless foreign policy, new government programs to address questionable needs and loose standards of personal conduct.

Nothing could be further from the truth, of course, but in the sound bite age we live in George Bush and Karl Rove have, as you said, managed to make "liberal" a dirty word. They've corralled the far right and managed to lure enough of the center to create and sustain a power base.

The Bush policies are gradually showing their true colors, but we need a sustained effort by liberals to put forth the message that liberal and conservative ideals are very much the same - and a lot different from the ideals of George Bush.

Bushies are giving liberals a very good name. I remember a few years ago they had succeeded in making "liberal" a negative word. Now most Americans wish we had moderate to liberal government. We did much better under Clinton.

Is that why Hillary is acting like a conservative and Bill is hanging out with the Bushies?
