Reagan appointed O'Connor because he thought she was a pleasant and reasonable person. It goes down in history as one of his stellar errors.

OTOH, the prospect of only being on the court for a limit of 12 years, then having to go live in the environment she helped create (and also having to defend herself), may have made her adhere to that reasonableness that Reagan thought he detected in her.

Another solution to judicial tyranny that has far better prospects than just getting the right president to make the appointments: Abolish the lifetime appointment in favor of a 12-year duty.

Even the military services only require 20 years...

If Bush nominates a rightwing Christian type, then it's war and the Bushies will lose. The Schiavo case made it apparent that the rightwing Christians are not to be trusted screwing with our judicial.

President Reagan won plaudits for appointing the first female Supreme Court justice

Nice attempt to rewrite history from The Economist. The left was pretty vociferous in their opposition when Reagan nominated her. Their MO was the same then as it is now.
