A nuclear war is unthinkable. If the US were to use all its nuclear capability, and superiority, the death toll would be biblical in number. I say this because it would not be a Hiroshima/Nagasaki event as the Chinese would surely respond in kind and force. So to win, the US would have to go all out, and then, nobody wins.

Russia, India, Pakistan and other nuclear powers would wonder if the world was suddenly embracing the "final solution", and wondering if or when they too would be attacked. Wondering nervously while their fingers are poised on their own "launch" buttons.

Maybe China will be willing to play chicken, hoping the US will back down. The US would have to be led by a mad suicidal maniac not to back down. Just as in the Hong Kong takeover, exactly what would be the great loss for the US anyway? The alternative could be world wide nuclear conflagration.

Actually, I see the Taiwan question as a pawn, being used by both sides to apply pressure and concessions in the larger field.
