I believe that part of the strategy of liberalized trade (globalisation) is to influence countries including China to embrace capitalism, and to slowly suck them in to world wide conventions and rules (dominated by the U.S.), with the eventual goal of regime overthrow by encouraging "democracy" and "rule of law". What a field day they would have then, with Bankers and Lawyers moving in to China with business men in tow.

So, I think the US is and will be patient and I don't see a serious military conflict with China at all.

China of course knows the US intentions, but probably believes she will win in the end, extracting as much as possible from the US and the West financially, while playing their pawns such as Taiwan and N.Korea.

I agree that obviously China wants to be Asia's big power, and is continuing to modernize and build up her armed forces. Closer to home, China is facing down a determined bid by Japan to explore for oil in disputed borders. This is getting hotter and more serious, because, once again, oil is involved.
