Somehow, I think it could be much worse. At that time, we had a much more diversified income base supporting the economy. The "Big Three" WERE the big three. This time, the RE collapse may trigger a depression.

What might be worse than a collapse of the housing bubble?

Answer -- the bubble continues on and on.

That would mean runaway inflation for virtually everything before long. Housing prices are so out of line that they either must drop sharply or overall inflation must accelerate enormously to establish some kind of balance IMHO.
