They are openly in bed with the DNC as well as openly trying to smear the Bush Admin. The Madness Continues Power Line Time's Matt Cooper, who apparently double-crossed Karl Rove by writing an article to the effect that the administration was making war on Joe Wilson after Rove answered Cooper's questions about Wilson on deep background in the course of a phone call by Cooper that was ostensibly about welfare reform, was on Meet the Press this morning. I didn't see the appearance, nor have I seen a transcript. But the Associated Press is already trumpeting Cooper's televised statement that Dick Cheney's chief of staff, "Scooter" Libby, was a second source for Cooper's writing about Valerie Plame : <<< Vice President Dick Cheney's top aide was among the sources for a Time magazine reporter's story about the identity of a CIA officer, the reporter said Sunday. Until last week, the White House had insisted for nearly two years that vice presidential chief of staff Lewis Libby and presidential adviser Karl Rove were not involved in the leaks of CIA officer Valerie Plame's identity. Cooper said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he spoke to Libby after first learning about Wilson's wife from Rove. On Sunday, Cooper also said there may have been other sources for that information. He declined to elaborate. >>> Missing from the AP's breathless account is the fact that Cooper, not Libby, brought up the fact that Plame was responsible for sending Joe Wilson to Niger. Time's online exclusive, "Matthew Cooper: What I Told The Grand Jury", says: On background, Cooper had asked Libby if he had heard anything about Wilson's wife sending him to Niger. Libby answered with words to the effect of "Yeah, I've heard that too." Wow, what a scandal! White House aides had heard the same rumors about Valerie Plame that reporters had heard; in Rove's case, it's been reported that he heard the rumors from reporters in the first place. It's interesting that Cooper "may have" had other sources about Plame, whom he declines to name. Based on what is publicly known, it seems likely that those other sources were fellow journalists. The salient fact, one would think, is that the rumor that Bob Novak, Rove, Cooper and Libby (along with other journalists and presumably others in the administration) heard was true: contrary to Joe Wilson's assurances, Valerie Plame was indeed involved in sending her husband to Niger. UPDATE: A reader points out that Cooper is married to Democratic Party strategist Mandy Grunwald. Is that fact relevant to Cooper's "burning" of Karl Rove? It is relevant to Cooper's reasons for disclosing two of his Plame "sources," but declining to disclose the others? Who knows? But isn't this information that the media ought to supply so that we can intelligently evaluate Cooper's actions and motivations? FURTHER UPDATE: Another reader has forwarded the transcript of Cooper's Meet the Press appearance. It appears that the AP's account was seriously misleading, at best. Cooper clearly said this morning that he told Libby that Plame worked for the CIA, not vice versa: <<< MR. RUSSERT: Did Mr. Libby say at any time that Joe Wilson's wife worked for the CIA? MR. COOPER: No, he didn't say that. MR. RUSSERT: But you said it to him? MR. COOPER: I said, "Was she involved in sending him?," yeah. MR. RUSSERT: And that she worked for the CIA? MR. COOPER: I believe so. >>> The most miniscule "scandal" in history keeps getting smaller and smaller. If Valerie Plame was a covert agent (which she apparently wasn't), why can't Cooper be prosecuted for "outing" her to Libby?powerlineblog.com news.yahoo.com ;_ylt=Alud0UMlmfWGvGHr._Jyo.RZJ_wA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUltime.com news.yahoo.com
