Governments have harvested the idealistic young to fight their wars for them for millenia. It's easy to convince even smart young people with little life experience that they're fighting for good, and are destined to be heros and save their civilization. The terrorists have just turned it back on us. It's the same game, without the jingoistic nationalism governments attatch to it. Blowing yourself up for your God may even be an even purer, easier to sell form of lunacy.
