I think they are exremist- as we define extremist. I think tribal societies are probably more prone to fanaticism and black and white thinking and hence extremism, though there is plenty of it right here in the US, imo. There's nothing inherently wrong with black and white thinking, and extremism, just as there's nothing inherently right with relativism and humanism, but if you prefer humanism it's best not to look to tribal societies, or people in non-tribal societies who make their own tribes, because they are more comfortable in a tribal type society, where they can feel it's them and their tribe against everyone else. And let's face it, if you think that way, it IS you and your tribe against everyone else. You can make it come true if you believe it enough- whether you live in the US, or in Iraq.

At the core of all civil wisdom, abstract philosophy, or religious principal is some common agreement. Decent human beings grant one another personal autonomy while encouraging peaceful coexistence among individuals and groups.

Any individual who perverts the principles of peaceful coexistence to further an abusive course of corrupted loyalty can only be described as an extremist. The most extreme being the conduct of a person who would blow up innocent human beings to cause harm to the competition.

"Neither madness nor extremism is required to explain their actions.

Madness and extremism is at the very pinnacle of what explains their actions.
