Political solution - yes it would be a plan to marginalize them, either completely or somewhat like the ANC's succession to power has marginalized the communists and unions (which they are currently trying to resist through demonstrations and strikes rather than violence).

The mind-boggling complexity arises with "reshaping the Arab world" - who does it, how, what's the plan, how do you reconcile dozens of countries and cultures and clans, etc.

I understand the Bush plan for revamping the Middle East and find it overly simplistic and only marginally effective. The blowback political effect from using US troops and making it a US-led crusade is considerable.

I also have no doubt that no one I have ever seen on SI, myself high on that list, knows enough about the Middle East and international security policy to draw up a plausible blueprint.

Like many things in life, the best-laid plans will go awry and the actual policy implementation will be a messy jumble that our leaders make up as they go along.
