I get it completely. OBL is our enemy number 1. The neocon vision was to fight OBL by trying to take him out, but also by installing a Democracy in the heart of the Arab lands.

Let's face it. The first order root cause may be OBL. The second order root cause may be the West's dealing unfairly in the region and even going so far as to prop up and arm very bad men. However, the ultimate root cause of all this shit is one very simple thing. These people lack freedom and they lack a legitimate means to surface their frustrations in a peaceful way through a duly elected government. So the ultimate root cause is lack of democracy in the Middle East. Fascist type of ideologies don't find very fertile ground in democracies, which is why you never get a big movement like OBL's in the West. Instead, you get fringe groups that are easily controllable. OBL's movement isn't fringe and it's not easily controllable, because his ideology grows like bacteria in shit due to the lack of democracy in that region.

The neocons were trying to go after that ultimate root cause with their war in Iraq. It turns out that it is one hell of a lot more difficult to achieve, in large part due to the fact that OBL and his ilk don't want democracy. They want a theocracy.

You contend that taking out OBL would have solved all the problems in the Middle East. I think that is naive. Democracy in the Middle East and open trade with the world is what will solve the problems over there.

Afterall, OBL is a symptom and as such, will easily be replaced by another demogogue when he dies. As long as the cancer of autocracy exists in that region, there will be plenty of OBLs and plenty of suicide bombers.
