Yes McCain is not a friend to the Republicans.

I can still remember the bitter battle between McCain and Bush in the primary, and at the time not as much was known about McCain's politics.

I'm a Republican, I dont dislike McCain, just am wary of him. I respect the sacrifice he made for this country but I wouldnt want to work for him. Heard he has a ferocious temper. The main reason I am wary of him is I am not sure he is a team player for our party. Like you say, he appears to put himself first and the party second. He's not a FAKE like Kerry was but he might have some of Kerry's bad habits. Maybe thats why they are buddies? jdn
