items are defined by their opposites Yeah, like male and female anatomy, lol. This relates to the yin/yang symbol. It does make sense that opposites define each other - with no dark light is meaningless, etc. Also, computerized data works in an on-or-off type of way with zeros and ones. imo, the Zen practitioner is glimpsing a basic principle of this constructed universe of ours - it's built on duality.
