Don't look for salvation from politicians.

We have to get our act together and the world will have a tough time catching up to us. But, if we elect small minded politicians, we will be in trouble

Thanks for the excellent post. You can always be counted on for lucidity.

"I don't think we have anything to worry about with competition."

It is hard to fight demographics. Unless something really strange happens China will have the largest economy in the world by 2020 - 2040.

"if we elect small minded politicians, we will be in trouble."

Even if we elect large minded politicians we may be in trouble. Right now IMO the front runner in 2008 is Hillary. She already showed us a taste of what she thinks in the health care task force. Do you think it should be illegal to practice medicine for money? Hillary wanted to make it punishable by imprisonment.

Right now, the best bet we have to save our country is a balance budget Constitutional Amendment. The people have already discovered they can vote themselves the keys to the treasury. That is the death knell for democracies.
