I think that's the main issue. There are not many problems and objections to the EU which couldn't be fixed by removing Turkey from the picture.

Some think free trade with Turkey with prohibitions against immigration is the best solution. Some business people see Turkey as their own built-in China with low labor costs. Clearly this benefit is seen as a major problem by employees. So even free trade with Turkey is causing problems.

We know few in France seriously support Le Pen, but many secretly enjoy the way he embarrasses the pro-EU politicians. Regardless, I doubt there will be enough "maturity" to integrate Turkey into the EU anytime during the next thirty years, perhaps make that one hundred years.

There are many good geopolitical arguments for integrating Turkey into the EU now, but for the man on the street those are abstractions and a woman walking down the street in a burka is annoying enough today to ensure a No vote on Turkey or any process which leads to integrating Turkey.
