I think, abortion as a sin is one of those historical effects on religion. My understanding is that the Catholic church did not declare abortion sinful until 1869. And that had a lot to do with the declining birth rate among the Catholics.

Does anyone know more on this? How did abortion become such a religious issue? It seems to have been legal at the time of constitution.
