They see themselves as driven by the highest motives. The greater glory of Allah is one thing. Getting your rocks off by killing Western tourists, especially pretty girls, is another (sorry for the bluntness). Passing around snuff flicks of "infidels" being beheaded is something else, yet again. It's tantamount to porn, for some it probably is porn. Except for a few weirdos, the vast majority of Muslims at least say they reject this type of behavior. I suppose you could argue, by analogy, that some in, say, NAMBLA are "driven by the highest motives" but that's just whitewash, or hogwash.
