Former Oregon Congressman Al Uhlman championed a VAT about 20 years ago and was unelected at the first opportunity. It is a very unpopular tax, I'm afraid.

I'm all for tax simplification, but simplification and complexity are strange bedfellows. Simple things like a voluntary tax (State Lotteries) have big consequences.

Peter, I guess you could say I was part of that entrenched tax preparation industry (CPA) but I can assure you I know of no one who likes the Federal code. It takes a library about the size of a 15'x15' room with all the walls lined with bookshelfs to adequately practice tax preparation today, and even then you have to subscribe to expensive publications that come out regularly to keep your library up to date.
I believe, even with the flat tax, corporations would likely be taxed regularly thus assuring an income to the tax preparers. (gg) jdn
