Motorola, Cisco Team On Cellular Wi-Fi July 26, 2005

The Motorola and Cisco technology will operate using Wi-Fi inside the enterprise and cellular telephony elsewhere, with a seamless handoff of communications between networks.

EE Times

....
By blending key features and benefits of mobile cellular, 802.11 wireless and enterprise fixed networks, Motorola (Schaumburg, Ill.) and Cisco (San Jose, Calif.) expect to provide a single mobile communications device to enable anytime, anywhere communications.

....The solution will be available as an extension to the Cisco CallManager IP-based communications system, utilizing a standards-based interface. [ Except IT folks struggle with the interface because mobile interace is more popular - hm? ]

Motorola and Cisco plans to make the dual mode solution available in early 2006.

Do the math. If you typically get 25 mpg and then you switch to a plug in hybrid that gets 100 mpg, then you will get 75 more mile to the gallon. If you drive 12,000 miles in a year, how many gallons of gas will you save by driving the plug in hybrid?

Answer = 12,000 / (100-25) = 160 gallons saved per year.

If gas costs, $2.40 per gallon, then you save $384 (160 X $2.40).

If a plug in hybrid costs $3K more than a comparable car, then your breakeven is in 7.8 years.
