So is that what you teach your students about bullies? As long as they are not bothering you then just ignore it. My wife works in a school, but that's not how she handles bullies, and that's not what she teaches the kids, but it's probably one of those "do as I say not as I do" sort of thing with you.

THE BYSTANDER
"Bystanders are the third group of players in this
tragedy. They are the supporting cast who aid
and abet the bully, through acts of omission and commission.
They stand idly by or look away, or they can
actively encourage the bully or join in and become
one of a bunch of bullies. Injustice overlooked or
ignored becomes a contagion that infects even those
who thought they could turn away.
Standing Up and Speaking Out
Bullying is challenged when the majority stands up
against the cruel acts of the minority. Establishing
new norms, enforcing playground rules, and increasing
supervision are policy decisions that can help
reduce the incidents of bullying. Since much of the
bullying goes on “under the radar of adults,” (read SI Dave)a potent
force is kids themselves showing bullies that they will
not be looked up to, nor will their cruel behavior be
condoned or tolerated.
Kids need not be bystanders.
They can become active witnesses, standing up for
their peers, speaking out against injustices, and taking
responsibility for what happened among themselves."

"I think name calling is wrong, and I think perpetuating conflict is wrong, and I think one side can ALWAYS stop, but it takes two, at a minimum, to keep a fight going."

Nope, solon is perfectly capable of spewing venom at anyone and everyone (except you, of course) regardless of whether they respond at all. Haven't you noticed that 3/4 of the posts here are from solon? Did you not notice Sun Tzu's polite explanations as to why solon's behavior on another thread got him banned there? I'm sure if you check the replies from solon to those posts, you'll find nothing but more venom. And that's how he reacts to criticism from someone who appears to agree with solon on many substantive points. Others need not even criticize his behavior to earn his rath - all they need do is fail to bow to his infinite (self-proclaimed) wisdom in all things.

Not that I expect you to check. That would require removal of your blinders.
