Part of the problem is that churches were not meant to be capitalist endeavors, but that is what many have become. They want more patrons so they can make more money. Here in the Bible Belt, the largest buildings in town are the giant churches. The inherent conflict is that by watering down their message into a more feel-good, populist stance, they attract more people and are "successful" as a church. A charismatic and energetic young preacher with a degree from seminary who really packs in a crowd can make a quarter-mil a year in a big church. This is in depressed local economies where the median income is barely $20k/yr, and by preaching the teachings of one who advocated abandoning material wealth, not accumulating it. Like the bumper sticker says, "Jesus is Coming ... And He is Pissed."

Christianity is centered around the concept of self determination. It promotes individualism as an expression of free will. The Lutherans and the Anglicans Church broke off from the Catholic Church in the 1500's to establish independence. biblicalheritage.org biblicalheritage.org More of this conversation can be gained by looking at predestination.
