Like Grand Central Station, we could question the definition of "individualism." imho, Christianity defines it by allowing the individual to make his or her own choices and be judged based upon those choices and not the actions of others. It's a common theme in the Bible that the majority opinion is often wrong.

Also, there is the idea that loving others is actually good for the individual. For example, when sick people pet a dog or cat, their blood pressure will often drop slighty and a small improvement in health can be theorized. People who love others are probably at peace with themselves, and thus physically healthier. Likewise, some people who dedicate their lives to the happiness of others end up happier than if they had spent a lifetime focused only on themselves. The irony of it all seems almost ... zen?
