The bird flu story is interesting and worth keeping an eye on but there are tens of thousands of possible pandemics that the U.S. is unprepared to face. The reason we are unprepared to face them is that they do not exist. Back when SARs was the scare I said let me know when 1,000 people are dead from it in the U.S., and I will start worrying about it; same goes for bird flu. In the meantime I'll worry more about getting squashed by a 5,000 pound SUV from hell on my way to work in the morning.
